It’s funny how you reach age 67, and your mind says “How the heck did I get here?!” Youth anxiously await the freedoms of adulthood; eat what you want, watch what you want, go to bed when you want, etc.

Then the coveted driver’s license, that will surely allow you total freedom! From there possibly a college student, or one of the youngest in your workplace. If you choose, a young married couple, then a young mother or father. These are all titles we gladly and proudly claim. Life moves along swiftly, suddenly the M word is mentioned; middle aged.

Nobody willingly claims this category, no number clearly defines middle age. Is it your 40’s, surely not, 50’s? There are no benefits for middle age like seniors receive. When I was in my mid-fifties, I had a flat tire a few miles from my home. Pulled to the side of the road, a nice young police officer in his clean, pressed uniform stopped to see if I was okay. Clearly, he did not want to change my tire, so I informed him my son was on his way.

He did wait till my son arrived, then went on his way. A bit confused as to why this healthy young cop did not promptly help me, my son said, “Why didn’t he change your tire?” I replied, “Well, I’m a tweener, not a pretty young thing or old enough to seem helpless.” I state my case, no advantage to claim the title; middle aged.

All to quickly you hit 60! Are you a really a senior, or is that 62? Soon 65 smacks you in the face, there is no denying, you are a senior. But wait, there are many benefits for this milestone, discounts, grandchildren and possibly respect?

If you exercise a little, or take up a new hobby, you are praised! Young people suddenly call you honey!

Enjoy everything about aging, keep your sense of humor. Take up a new hobby and exercise. You have wisdom that a young person can not possibly obtain, the wisdom of experiencing life, bad, good or indifferent. Proudly claim the title of being a senior, and remember...Don’t Live Old!
