As you might have noticed, I am a huge proponent of being outdoors. I think exercise is key to our health and wellbeing. Working out in a gym is good, (my husband and I belong to Planet Fitness), but we need fresh air, sunshine and the sights of nature.
As an adult, my career has been in the equine industry; training horses, instructing riders and barn management. I’m retired now, but still have a small barn with a couple of horses. Throughout the years I have seen many training theories, many fads, some I agree with, some I do not. In the equine and canine world there are “The Whisperers.” The Dog Whisperer, The Horse Whisperer…Robert Redford even starred in a movie about one. Always interested in learning, passionately loving both horses and dogs, I’ve made it a point to look into these techniques.
While I won’t say I agree with all of this, I do find one common denominator. Whether it be a horse or dog, “The Whisperer” wants you to get your animal moving, usually to the point of exhaustion. At that point you have a submissive, trainable horse or dog. Personally, I don't think that is training. I do know a pent-up horse or dog, with no exercise, does lead to behavioral problems and possibly aggression. Are we any different? Life styles, careers, television, computers etc. have caused us to live very sedentary lives, trapped inside.
Are we turning to unnecessary vices when exercise, and being outside might tire us into a contented mood?
If I don’t exercise and get outside, my guilty pleasure is over-indulging in carbs! I may not get pulled over for a bloated carb stomach, but I don’t feel good and it isn’t healthy! Check with your physician, start walking outside, find a park or reserve and look around at the beauty of nature. Breath deep to inhale the fresh air. In the spring, listen to the birds singing.
If nothing else, sit outside basking in the sunshine and fresh air. Hopefully you will start to chisel away your worry and stress, or just add a little more enjoyment to your day. Let this become your addiction…movement and the wonderful things of nature. Again, Don’t Live Old!!
