Two Ducks

Today as I walked through our trails, headed down to the pond, I spotted two ducks. One male and one female. They peacefully walked on the outside of the pond. As they saw me, they slowly walked in the opposite direction. No panic, just cautiously avoided me.

As geese and ducks migrate south and back north, they often stop for a stay in our pond. Hanging around until they move on. I’ve wondered if it’s like finding a Holiday Inn Express! We’ve even housed several families with young goslings. It’s fun to watch them, very peaceful, till they fly off honking loudly to announce their departure.

Compare this to geese and ducks that frequent public ponds near condos and apartments. Adults and children taking pleasure in throwing bread to them. Quickly the waterfowl become greedy and quite aggressive. Even with fights breaking out amongst themselves!

Is this an illustration of what can go astray with too many handouts? Even when we have the best intentions, things can quickly shift out of balance. The Bible states in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 "In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you, 'If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.'"

Always be compassionate, don’t cripple. Always help, don’t hinder. Always give, don’t stifle. Find balance, spend time outside observing nature and …..Don’t live old.
